Jay Z and Kanye West are allegedly being sued for copyright infringement for Watch the Throne track ‘The Joy’ by R&B singer Syl Johnson is suing them over sampling his 1967 song Different Strokes on their track The JoyThe suit basically say that Syl and his publisher, The Numero Uno Group, had heard the track, and had also seen his name in the album credits which he hadn’t been consulted about. The power of Def Jam may mean that this one will blow over and we may not hear anymore about it. The Watch the throne album is almost certain to go Platinum anytime soon and so if Syl doesn’t receive some kind of settlement more news maybe heard. The Pete Rock co-produced track is definitely one of my favourites on the album, with Jay-z returning to his 1996 esq reminiscent flow.Word of warning to all you producers out there using samples that haven’t been cleared.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
